When it comes to Singani, San Pedro is quite literally el creador. The creator.
The history of singani dates back more than 500 years when Catholic missionaries arrived in the New World and planted Muscat of Alexandria grape vines at San Pedro Mártir Vineyard — and it is a story that unites Europe, Africa, and South America.
Located in the Cinti Valley, Chuquisaca, in the southeast region of the country, San Pedro Mártir Vineyard sits along the Rio Grande and the Rio Chica, in a canyon surrounded by the Andes Mountains. It is here where Spanish winemakers first distilled a unique elixir of the North African Muscat of Alexandria grape in 1550 and christened the inaugural vintage of what would become Bolivia’s signature national spirit: singani.
Thus was the beginning of what now is the oldest active distillery in the world. Since its origins, generations of winemakers, vintners, and distillers have worked the mineral-rich Cinti Valley soil to perfect a singani that is floral and bright. In addition to two expressions of singani, San Pedro Mártir Vineyard produces a vino tinto and a port. We are also the distiller of choice for several other spirits brands.
Past owners of the vineyard include the 17th Century silver mine operator Antonio López de Quiroga and Bolivian industrialist Simón I. Patiño. The vineyard has been owned by the Calvo family since 1973.
Today, singani is internationally recognized as a unique brandy expression that can only be distilled in Bolivia.
The United States Distilled Spirits Council officially recognized singani in 2023.
